UCSC offers Economics students a unique opportunity -- a Field Study program associated with the major. Each quarter, opportunities are available for students to earn academic credit while working in the local community (Economics 193) or elsewhere (Economics 198). Field study provides you with a practical context in which you can apply and integrate your course material. You actually work in a business setting where you are trained and supervised by a professional in your area of interest. An Economics faculty member sponsors your field placement, providing guidance and encouraging you to blend the knowledge acquired in Economics courses with the training you receive in the field placement. Field study is open only to UCSC Economics, Global Economics or Business Management majors. Acceptance into the field study program is determined by academic standing, class level, and successful completion of Econ 100A/M, 100B/N, and 113.

SHOULD I DO FIELD STUDY?

Field study is most valuable for students who want to gain firsthand experience in Economics in order to clarify or further define their career goals. It is also an opportunity to apply what you have learned and use your skills and knowledge to help local businesses/organizations. Field study is an important addition to your resume and transcript, and is helpful when applying to graduate schools and jobs after graduation. An internship can enhance personal qualities that are useful in professional life such as the ability to work independently, increased self-confidence, good judgment, perseverance, and reliability. Students have praised the program, saying the experience was crucial to them in getting a job after graduation, and in helping them to choose a career path.

WHERE WOULD I BE WORKING?

Placements are available in brokerage firms, marketing and advertising agencies, accounting firms, software companies, human resource departments, trade associations, consulting firms, government agencies, community non-profits, local businesses and research organizations both in Santa Cruz and beyond.

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED IN FIELD STUDY?

Preparation begins the quarter before you want to do the field study. At the beginning of each quarter, you can attend an orientation session designed to give you information about the field study program and help you select your area of interest. After attending one of these initial meetings, you will need to complete an application for field study. If selected, you will meet with the field study coordinator, who will guide the process of finding a field placement, choosing a faculty sponsor and enrolling.

WHAT ARE THE FIELD STUDY ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS?

Like any 5-unit course, each 5-unit field study requires a total of 12 to 15 hours per week. Of these, students typically spend 12 hours working at their field placement. The remainder is spent on the academic project, meeting with your faculty advisor and fulfilling other requirements for the program. Each quarter, you are required to attend one mid-quarter meeting. You and your faculty sponsor will meet two times during the quarter to discuss your academic project, which integrates coursework with your field experience. Field study is Pass/No Pass only.

HOW LONG WILL MY FIELD STUDY LAST?

Field study takes place during time periods corresponding to UCSC's quarter system. You must be enrolled in Economics 193 or 198 during the quarter you are actually doing the field work (there is NO retroactive credit for work that has already been completed). Field study is worth 5 units of credit. Placements that provide you with more in-depth experience require a consecutive two-quarter commitment. Because of the demand for field study, students are limited to two quarters (10 Units) during their time at UCSC.

HOW DO I APPLY?

Applications for field study are available at the field study office, 401B E2 Building and are distributed during the Orientation Sessions. Please feel free to contact the Field Study program coordinator, at (831) 459-2028 or econintern@ucsc.edu if you have any questions. You must apply the quarter before your field study experience.
